Is teeth brushing at a groomer the same as a dental cleaning?

No. Grooming teeth brushing is surface cleaning while the dog is awake and comfortable. It does not examine or clean below the gum line and does not include dental diagnosis, scaling, polishing, extraction, anaesthesia or treatment.

How often should a dog's teeth be brushed?

The Hong Kong SPCA advises daily brushing with pet-safe toothpaste or gel and a veterinary dental check during the pet's annual health visit. Build acceptance gradually rather than forcing a full-mouth session.

Can human toothpaste be used for dogs?

No. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste or gel made for dogs or cats. Ask a veterinarian if a dog swallows human toothpaste or develops any adverse reaction.

Can grooming remove tartar or fix bad breath?

Grooming brushing cannot diagnose the cause of bad breath or clean tartar below the gum line. Persistent bad breath, red or bleeding gums, loose teeth, drooling, food refusal or pain while eating needs veterinary assessment.

They can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable.

Grooming

Uses pet-safe products on visible tooth surfaces while the dog is awake and comfortable. It does not scrape tartar, enter below the gum line or provide diagnosis.

At Home

Daily home brushing

Owners can build a short, low-pressure routine with a dog or cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste. Consistent home care is more meaningful than one occasional brushing session.

Veterinary

Veterinary dental examination and cleaning

A veterinarian evaluates the mouth, teeth and gums and may recommend cleaning, polishing, imaging, extraction or other treatment. These are not grooming services.

Boundary

A clean surface does not prove healthy gums

Problems below the gum line or at the back of the mouth may not be visible. Brushing cannot confirm that a dog is free from periodontal disease.

When To See A Vet

These signs should not be handled as a grooming-only question.

The Hong Kong SPCA lists bad breath, swollen gums, loose teeth, drooling and pain while eating among signs of dental disease.

Persistent bad breath or red gums

Odour, swelling, bleeding or pain when the mouth is touched needs assessment rather than a fragranced product that hides the smell.

Obvious tartar, loose or missing teeth

Tartar location, tooth stability and the area below the gums need veterinary judgement. A groomer should not scrape tartar or handle loose teeth.

Drooling, food refusal or altered chewing

Suddenly chewing on one side, dropping food, avoiding hard food or crying while eating are reasons to contact a veterinarian.

Facial swelling, bleeding or trauma

Marked swelling, persistent bleeding, a broken tooth or oral injury is outside routine grooming and needs prompt veterinary advice.

If a dog dislikes mouth handling, start with acceptance.

Begin with brief cheek contactDo not force the mouth open. First build comfort with face touch, a one-second lip lift and seeing the toothbrush.
Use only pet-safe productsChoose a dog or cat toothbrush, finger brush or toothpaste. Do not use human toothpaste or hard tools to scrape tartar.
Keep sessions short and voluntaryReduce difficulty or stop if the dog stiffens, turns away, lip-licks, pants, struggles or tries to bite.
