Avoidance
Freezing, hiding or trying to leave
Note whether this starts at the salon entrance, around the bath, near a table or only when a tool appears.
Nervous Dog Grooming · Hong Kong
Water, dryer noise, paw handling, unfamiliar people and a previous difficult visit can each change what is realistic. Start by describing the exact response, then agree on a pace and service scope.

Stress signals need context. One sign does not prove a diagnosis, but repeated or escalating signals should change how the visit is planned.
Avoidance
Note whether this starts at the salon entrance, around the bath, near a table or only when a tool appears.
Sound
Describe whether the dog pants, barks, stiffens, struggles or stops taking food when the sound starts.
Touch
Tell the groomer which areas the dog avoids and whether the reaction is new, worsening or linked to known pain.
Escalation
Clear disclosure protects the dog and the team. Avoid vague labels such as “a little naughty” when there is a specific handling risk.
Before Booking
The Hong Kong SPCA recommends discussing medical conditions, injuries, sensitive areas and fearful or reactive behaviour before grooming.
Send the breed, age, weight, coat photos, matting areas and the service you hope to arrange.
List what happens around water, dryers, brushing, nail care, lifting, strangers and previous salons.
Disclose pain, skin concerns, medication, injections, surgery, wounds or other recent treatment. Ask a veterinarian when fitness for grooming is uncertain.
Ask what is essential, what can wait and whether the visit may be shortened or divided if the dog cannot comfortably continue.
