Dog nail trimming, cutting and grooming in Hong Kong: what to check first.

Routine nail care may be part of a grooming visit, but nail length, the quick, black nails, dewclaws and the dog's response still determine what can be completed safely.

No forced finish

If the dog becomes highly distressed or the quick cannot be judged safely, fewer nails or a later plan may be more appropriate than forcing completion.

Four Practical Checks

Hong Kong’s AFCD advises regular trimming with dog-specific nail clippers. The actual need still depends on natural wear and individual growth.

Floor Contact

Do the nails touch the floor?

Look from the side while the dog stands naturally. Check every paw rather than judging from one visible nail.

Walking Sound

Has clicking on hard floors increased?

A repeated clicking sound can be a reminder, but paw shape, gait and the floor surface also affect what you hear.

Natural Wear

Where and how much does the dog walk?

Some active dogs wear nails on rough surfaces. Dogs walking mainly on softer ground may need checks sooner.

Dewclaws

Dewclaws do not wear against the ground

They are easy to miss because they sit higher on the leg. Check for excessive length, curling or snagging.

Black Nails & The Quick

The safest decision can be admitting that the quick is not visible.

The quick contains nerves and blood vessels

Cutting it causes pain and bleeding. It is easier to see in pale nails and often difficult to judge through black nails.

Remove only a small amount

Do not aim for the shortest possible result in one session. If the safe limit is unclear, stop and ask a veterinarian, veterinary nurse or experienced professional.

Very long nails may need staged maintenance

The quick can extend as a nail grows. There may be a limit to what can be safely shortened in one appointment.

Use equipment designed for dog nails

Human clippers and scissors are not shaped for canine claws. Unsuitable or blunt tools can compress or split a nail.

If paw handling is difficult, split the task into smaller steps.
