Dog ear cleaning in Hong Kong: routine grooming care or a vet issue?

Routine ear cleaning may be part of a grooming visit when the ear appears healthy. Frequent head shaking, scratching, redness, odour, pain or discharge should be examined by a veterinarian instead of treated as ordinary dirt.

Furrari Routine Grooming

Is dog ear cleaning included in grooming?

For a first Furrari grooming visit, routine ear cleaning is listed with nail trimming, anal-gland cleaning and paw-pad trimming as part of basic care. Bath & Basic starts from HK$308. Cleaning is only considered when the dog is comfortable and there are no abnormal ear signs.

Routine care only

Grooming can observe the outer ear and discuss routine cleaning. It cannot diagnose infection, ear mites, allergy, a foreign body or eardrum disease.

Stop and ask a vet

Repeated head shaking, scratching, redness, smell, pain, swelling, discharge, head tilt or balance loss needs veterinary advice.

Look Before Cleaning

Separate a healthy ear, a veterinary care plan and a medical warning sign.

PDSA says most dogs do not need regular ear cleaning. The MSD Veterinary Manual lists head shaking, odour, redness, scratching and discharge among common signs of otitis externa.

Healthy Ear

No fixed cleaning interval

If there is no unusual smell, redness, pain or discharge, routine observation may be enough. Over-cleaning can irritate the canal.

Vet Plan

Very waxy or recurrent ears

When a dog repeatedly develops heavy wax or ear disease, let a veterinarian choose the cleaner, technique and frequency.

Warning Signs

Odour, redness, pain or discharge

Stop home cleaning, record which ear changed and when, and arrange veterinary examination of the cause.

Urgent Change

Head tilt or loss of balance

A tilted head, poor balance, unusual eye movement or marked pain may involve deeper ear structures and needs prompt veterinary care.

Do Not Put Inside

Four actions to avoid.

Pushing cotton buds into the canal

This can push material deeper or injure the canal. Handle only the area and method a veterinarian has shown you to use safely.

Hydrogen peroxide, human drops or home remedies

An inflamed canal may be sensitive, and the eardrum may not have been assessed. Do not improvise with human or unapproved products.

Cleaning every day because wax is visible

Normal wax varies between dogs. Cleaning too often can itself cause irritation; use the normal baseline and veterinary advice.

Forcing a painful or struggling dog

Pain can reflect inflammation, a foreign body or another problem. Stop to reduce injury and fear, then contact a veterinarian.

Vet Or Groomer?

Grooming can provide routine care; diagnosis and treatment belong with a veterinarian.

  1. Observe before groomingDisclose previous ear disease, recent medication, touch sensitivity and any difficult ear-cleaning experience.
  2. Discuss routine cleaning only without warning signsAny grooming step depends on the dog being comfortable and the task being safe to complete.
  3. Odour, redness, pain or discharge goes to a vetA groomer cannot distinguish infection, yeast, parasites, allergy, a foreign body or an eardrum problem.
  4. Return to grooming after veterinary assessmentShare the veterinary instructions and the dog's current response before confirming the service scope.

Quick Answer

How often should you clean a dog's ears?

Most healthy dogs do not need ear cleaning on a fixed schedule. Observe the ear flap, odour, wax and behaviour. For repeated head shaking, scratching, redness, smell, pain or increased discharge, stop cleaning and contact a veterinarian. Grooming cannot diagnose or treat an ear infection.
